    How to create a 2D flood map

    Once you have results from a 2D simulation, the 2D Flood Map tool can be used to create the flood extent outline (for example, in Google Earth format), or flood depth grids from certain timesteps in a user-friendly format. The tool can be used to process multiple results at once. This functionality brings a high level of customisation to make 2D modelling easier and more efficient.

    To use the 2D Flood Map tool:

    1. On the Results tab, click the 2D Flood Map button to open the tool in a new window.
    2. Add your results by clicking the Add from project, Add from file or Add from layers button as appropriate, and selecting the results of interest.
    3. Check the Variable(s) and Timestep(s) of interest.
      Note
      If you have multiple results or domains loaded within the window, you can select the variables and timesteps and then use the button provided below the table to Apply current selections to all loaded results.
    4. Select the Output Format wanted from the drop-down list provided. This can be adjusted later for specific (or all) results. 
    5. Click OK to automatically add all combinations of your selections to the table.
    6. Repeat steps 2-5 to add further flood maps to the table. If needed, use Remove to remove selected flood maps from the table, or Remove All to clear the table altogether.
    7. By default, the outputs will be exported to the folder where the selected result file(s) are located. If you want to change this, click the radio button Use custom folder and then the button to the right of the field to navigate to a folder of your choice.
      Note
      You can also create a new folder at this point, directly from within the tool.
    8. Make additional changes to the exported file format(s) if needed. This can be done using the drop-downs with the Output Format column on individual rows within the table, or by selecting rows (hold Ctrl to select multiple rows) and selecting a Output Format from the drop-down at the top.
    9. An Upper limit and Lower limit can optionally be defined. Results outside of the specified range will be excluded from the flood maps produced by the tool. 
      Note

      If considered hazard data, i.e. the CalculateHazard variable, options are available to define the debris factor method (select Static, and provide the factor, or select Variable) and to Select land use type.

    10. Click Export to create all the files listed within the table. The Status will display as Complete for each row in the table and the outputs will be saved within the folder specified.
      Note
      When exporting to .shp or .kml format, your output will not be generated if the result grid is blank for the timestep selected. In this case, you will see the Status of Warning: shapefile not created. Input grid may have no data.
