    Article Summary

    The 1D Model Health Checker carries out comparative tests within the model using only the information within the model data file and some model results if given. Therefore, whilst some errors are easy to detect they are not necessarily easy to fix without additional user input.

    The 1D Health Checker offers several different ways to find and examine errors.

    • The "Fix" buttons next to each test allow all the errors of this type to be fixed sequentially with user permission and / or additional inputs (e.g. Coefficients of discharge)
    • The log output at the bottom of the editor shows all the errors and the ones that the Health Check can fix automatically by Double Clicking on the error. However, the new model file must be saved before closing the program.

    When using automatic fixes it is a good practice to check that the fix being applied is correct. All model fixes always leave the model capable of running, although some additional user input may be required for the model to be representative of the physical system being modelled.

    Automatic Fixes

    Automatic fixes are fixes that require no additional user information. Typically these are weir or sluice P1 or P2 values.

    Semi-Automatic Fixes

    Semi-Automatic Fixes require user intervention whilst the fix is being carried out or afterwards before using the model.

    • Bernoulli Loss Bypasses

    • General Loss Bypasses

    • Out of Bank Spill & Floodplain Coefficients

    • Reservoir to Reservoir Spill & Floodplain Coefficients

    • Other Spill Coefficients

    When spill bypasses are added, any additional junctions are automatically inserted and the spill over the structure is set very high to prevent water flowing over as the exact topographic data is unknown. Therefore, additional user topographic is required together with the discharge coefficient. When discharge coefficients are fixed the user must supply the new discharge coefficient.

    Notes

    The 1D Model Health Checker should be viewed as a way of automating the many repetitive tasks during the process of checking/auditing models. It is an assistant to, and not a replacement for, a full check by an experienced modeller.

    The output file gives an error / section ratio value. This is simply the number of non-conformities found in a model divided by the number of sections in the model, and is designed to be a metric to compare different models, since it takes into account the number of non-conformities and the size of the model.
