1D River Modelling

This section of the manual is all about 1D river modelling.
Flood Modeller's 1D river solver is used to model open channel and overbank flows in any network of channels. Any sensible looped or branched network can be modelled using Flood Modeller's 1D river solver, which incorporates a wide range of hydraulic units including a variety of conduit types and hydraulic structures.
Flood Modeller's 1D river solver computes flow depths and discharges using a method based on the equations for shallow water waves in open channels - the Saint-Venant equations. Options are provided for steady-state (time invariant) or unsteady simulations.
Flood Modeller also provides the option to create fully integrated simulations, linking 1D urban components with 1D river and/or 2D components.
In 1D river modelling, a River Network describes the underlying system. This consists of multiple 1D units, or nodes, to provide the physical properties of the river.
The geometry and roughness of the river bed is specified in River Section Nodes. These allow the water to be routed between them.
Details of River Boundary Nodes are required to describe how water enter and leaves the system.
If present within the modelled reach, details of other River Structures and Features (bridges, culverts, reservoirs, etc.) can be included.
Initial Conditions are very important in 1D river modelling. These provide the initial water level throughout the network. If these are not defined realistically, the model may become unstable and fail.
When setting up River Simulations, details of your river network and initial conditions must be provideed, alongside timing and run options (whether the simulation is steady-state or unsteady). 1D river simulations can be run individually or in batches.

Multiple parameters can be calculated in a 1D river simulation, flow, stage, velocity, total energy, channel conveyance and average sheer stress, among others. Several options are provided for visualising these River Results, via fully customisable charts and flood maps.
