    Article Summary

A valid river network can be used in multiple simulations. Recall from the modelling introduction what we mean by a simulation.

    General Functionality

Flood Modeller provides functionality to Start a new simulation, and also to Load a simulation.

Once the simulation has been setup (please see below for further information), you can Run a 1D river simulation.

Rather than running a single simulation, it is also possible to create a suite a simulations quickly and easily using the 1D Simulation Builder. Multiple simulations can be run concurrently to increase efficiency using the Batch Runner, or using Flood Cloud.

    Setting up a Simulation

By default, a new simulation will use the active river network (together with the network initial conditions). To adjust this you must Configure the Files tab of the simulation.

By default, a new simulation will be set to the time-invariant (Steady state) solver (recall this is ideal for creating Initial Conditions.) It is necessary to Configure the Times tab to set your simulation start and end time, and timestep. This is also where you can set the type of simulation to run.

    Additional Simulation Options

A host of optional features are also available for your simulations when river modelling.
A helpful and time-saving feature is to Use Event Data to define adjustments to your river network, representing different scenarios to be modelled. These could, for example, contain boundary units to be "replaced", provided in the same format as they appear in a river network file but with revised time series data specified.

The inflow for the simulation can be adjusted (select an alternative return period, scale Flow-Time series data, and more!) without any changes to the underlying network. This is done by Configuring the Hydrology tab.

An additional option to provide inflow data is to Use Flow-Time Series Data. These can store multiple flow-time profiles for selection within your simulation, and this option is particularly helpful for FSU hydrological data. Your river network will still require valid upstream boundaries (although these could contain dummy flow profiles), please see the River Boundary Nodes section for further details.

Alongside the default variables calculated within a 1D river simulation, Additional Outputs can be selected when setting up the simulation.

The Max/Min/Mean (.mmm) File also provides invaluable data.

There are many other options for your 1D river simulations, including settings specifically for low flow, the option to use default values from previous versions, and many more! Further details can be found in the Technical Reference.

You may also be interested in linking your 1D river network to other 1D and/or 2D components and creating an Integrated simulation where data is passed between components dynamically at simulation runtime.
