    River Section Nodes


    Article summary

    A river network will likely consist of multiple River Section nodes. These provide important information about the underlying channel and allow the water to be routed between them.

    Recall to work on a loaded river network, you must ensure you have Selection Mode set to 1D River.

    How to set the Selection Mode

    Selection Mode is displayed at all times at the bottom of the map view. When building and editing 1D river networks, you must be in 1D River selection mode. Right-click anywhere on the Map view to access a menu allowing you to adjust the selection mode.

    Selection mode can also be turned on and off using the toggle provided on the 1D Urban Build tab.


    General Functionality

    Flood Modeller provides functionality to Add a River Section manually to your river network (although this may not be the most efficient way to produce your River Section nodes, see below for further details).

    Right-click menus enable you to easily Move a River Section to a new location, or Delete a River Section altogether if needed.

    The guide Working with River Section nodes details many of the parameters and options available, however it is still recommended you read the sections below for further information.

    Necessary Data

    The channel geometry is an important aspect that must be provided.

    If you Add a River Section manually, the required cross-sectional data must be entered manually when Working with River Section nodes.

    Additionally to this manual approach, if you have ground data available in an appropriate GIS format then you can efficiently Create River Sections from the map.

    Options are also provided to Import EACSD cross-sectional data and Import HEC-RAS cross-sectional data.

    Alongside the cross-sectional data, the roughness of the channel must be specified for each River Section.

    One option here is to enter the roughness for a specific River Section when Working with River Section nodes. A second option is to Globally edit roughness for multiple nodes.

    The connectivity of your River Sections is also important. When multiple River Section nodes are added to a network, a line will automatically appear on the map indicating the order of connectivity.

    When Working with River Section nodes, we can adjust this order of connectivity as required. We can also enter the positive distance to next value required between two consecutive River Sections.

    Optional Features

    Where georeferencing is available, this can be entered in the River Section properties. Functionality is provided to Georeference River Sections where this information is not available.

    Panel markers, levees and other features can be specified when Working with River Section nodes.

    You may also be interested in Extending River Cross-Sections into the floodplain where this is required.

    Alternatives

    An alternative to using River Section nodes within a network is to instead define sections for the Muskingum Routing method. This is recommended for advanced modellers only.
