Linking 1D River Networks and 1D Urban Networks

    Article summary

You can integrate a river and urban network to allow (for example) the outflow from a pipe to enter a river. Both river and urban networks should be fully defined beforehand.
The urban simulation must be set to use the Dynamic Wave routing model and have the Variable Time Step setting deactivated.

    Note:
You may also find smaller timesteps assist with stability when integrating this with your river network.

To integrate a river network and urban network, you must initially set up the so-called “link-references” to indicate which nodes are connected, and how the flow is transferred at each. You can Select the link-references to use from 2 available types.

Flood Modeller provides a specific tool to help with creating your link-references. You can Use the link-reference generator to quickly and easily set up the link-references, and also visualise the link-references to check for anomalies.

After defining the link-references, you need to Configure the 1D simulation window to setup an integrated 1D simulation. This needs to specify your link-reference file, alongside your river network and urban network.

Ensure you save your simulation to keep any changes. Your integrated simulation is now ready to run. This is run in exactly the same way as when you Run a 1D river simulation.

If you encounter issues with your integrated simulation, exploring the Diagnostics and tips will help identify problems and resolve warnings and errors.

Alongside the multiple options provided for viewing 1D river and urban results, Integrated Modelling Results include the data passed across the linked aspects as an additional output.
