How to specify a new 2D or 1D-2D linked simulation

This section explains how to execute a new 2D model simulation. It assumes you have already prepared a 2D simulation xml file that specifies all of your input data and model settings (see How to Prepare a 2D Model XML File). This section also describes some options available to visualise and review your 2D model results.

Running a 2D Simulation

  1. If you have already prepared your 2D simulation XML file then after opening Flood Modeller either load the project containing this file or right-click on the Simulation section of the project view and select Add Item from the displayed menu (then browse to the file and select Open). Double-click on the simulation file in the project view to open it in the 2D simulation window:

Alternatively if you are defining a new 2D simulation then either right-click on the Simulation section of the project view and select New 2D Simulation from the displayed menu or click on New 2D Simulation in the Simulation tab of the main toolbar. The 2D simulation window will open automatically ready for you to start specifying your model.
  2. When you have completed setting up your 2D model or 1D-2D linked model (see How to Prepare a 2D Model XML File) you can proceed to run a simulation by clicking the Run button on the 2D simulation definition window. The current settings will be automatically saved prior to the simulation starting.

During the simulation an additional (DOS) window will be displayed providing information on the status of the run. This includes the expected time remaining until completion.
  3. When a run has completed you will need to press the Enter key to exit from the simulation status window. You will be returned to the main Flood Modeller interface ready to load and review your model results (if your simulation completed successfully).

Loading and viewing 2D Model Results

If a completed 2D or 1D-2D linked simulation has results data available then this will be signified in the project view by a blue triangle symbol visible next to the simulation name, as shown below:

The procedure for loading and reviewing results data associated to this model is as follows:

  1. Right-click on the simulation name and select View Result from the displayed menu. Alternatively you can use the Add GIS Data function to browse to your 2D results data. You can filter the file browser to only show 2D results format and then select the appropriate .sup or .2dm file from your results folder.
  2. The associated 2D results files (xmdf.sup/sup/2dm/dat files) will be loaded. You may be prompted to specify which results parameters you wish to load. In this case click OK to load all available results (default option).
  3. Results data will be added under a new group heading in the Layers window. If multiple results datasets are loaded then a single raster and single vector dataset will be set to active in the map view (e.g. depth and velocity) - only one of each type can be active at any one time. Furthermore the maximum time step will be selected by default, which is usually signified by “9999”, i.e. this is a pseudo time step showing the maximum value observed in each grid cell throughout the simulation.

  4. Options for viewing your 2D results data in Flood Modeller are summarised as follows:

You can find more detailed guidance on each of these post-simulation analyses in the relevant sections elsewhere in the user guide.
